DONYALE LUNA 1ST BLACK SUPERMODEL

Donyale Luna born Peggy Ann Freeman was the first black supermodel in the whole world. She made Vogue cover in 1966 when it was almost a taboo to feature a black person as any kind of model. She was striking.

She was six feet two inches tall and stunning. It was said that people stopped to stare at her when she was yards away from them. They said she looked out-of-this-world. It was the same reaction when she stepped into a room. Everything seemed to stop .

Her modelling career took off in Britain. In 1965, she was the first black person on the cover of, “Harpers Bazaar” since it began ninety-eight years before. Luna graced the pages of “Cosmopolitan” in 1967, American Vogue in 1969, 1970. The middle spread of the German magazine, “Twen” featured her a few months after she arrived Europe. Relocating to Europe was one of her best decisions.

Donyale was friends with Mick jagger, Michael Caine, Brian Jones, Yul Brynner, to mention a few. She loved the Arts. It was a matter of time before the acting world signed her up.

We do not talk about this legend enough. Peggy Ann Freeman opened eternal doors for every model of colour. Do drop a heart in the comments section for this beautiful, natural work of art. BTW she loved being barefooted.
