Mary Fields was known as Black Mary or stagecoach Mary . She was born almost two hundred years ago and died over hundred years ago. She was six feet tall. Mary was a mail carrier. The first African woman to do this job as a star route post woman. She made a point to leave her name in the sands of time even in the midst of oppression and segregation.

Mary was born into slavery. Became a chambermaid at 33 after emancipation in 1865. In 1884 she went to work for a nun. She was the forewoman there. Doiñg the work of repairs, gardening, maintenance, fetching supplies and laundry. She lost her job because of a disgruntled male subordinate.

She ran a tavern after but became broke after ten months because she allowed poor people eat for free. At age sixty she got her famous mail job. Fearless Mary armed herself to deliver supplies and mails in the harsh terrains of Montana. She never missed a day and retired after eleven years of service.

Her town of Cascade loved her so much that her birthday was celebrated as a holiday.
